Our Impact

UC Merced opened its doors Sept. 5, 2005 as the newest campus in the University of California system and the first American research university of the 21st century. Situated near Yosemite National Park, the campus significantly expands access to the UC system for students throughout the state. UC Merced is on an ambitious trajectory of growth. In just 15 short years, the campus has already earned a spot on top 100 universities according to the US News and World Report. UC Merced serves as a major base of advanced research, a model of sustainable design and construction, and a stimulus to economic growth and diversification throughout the region.

Since its inception in 2000, UC Merced has contributed approximately $946 million to the region's economy and $1.7 billion statewide. Recent construction of the Merced 2020 Project has doubled the overall campus footprint and has supported thousands of jobs and stimulating new business development. The campus is a model of sustainability: UC Merced is the only higher education institute in the nation with LEED certification on all its buildings.

Named as the fastest growing university by the US Department of Education, UC Merced now serves nearly 9,000 students, 99% of whom are from California. UC Merced's distinct mission is to help first-generation college students achieve academic success and impact social mobility for underrepresented populations. With almost two-thirds of our students the first in their families to attend college, and 64% Pell Grant eligible, UC Merced students embrace the promise of economic mobility. As a Hispanic Serving Institution, the university educates a diverse student body; we are leading the way in California and the nation for helping young people build better lives for themselves and their families through higher education.

Private support lies at the heart of our university's vital partnerships with the community. Our many generous donors have continued to show support for UC Merced's mission by contributing funds to fill the gap where public funding ends. This support ensures our university will continue research efforts that enhance the lives of Californians for years. Your investment could create a lasting impact for future generations. We invite you to help develop the next generation of leaders in research, discovery, and innovation through your support and to be an integral part of building the future of education in California.
